Peter Hamilton: New financial regulator must be held to account
13.03.12
It was revealing to watch the senior officials from the FSA being grilled by the committee but it was shocking then to see how the FSA, in a display of arrogance, brushed aside the committee’s call for there to be a delay in the introduction of... This time last year, in an article for Money Marketing regarding the FSA and its failures of regulation in relation to Equitable Life, Northern Rock and HBOS, I drew attention to the FSA’s lack of proper accountability to the Government or... As the Financial Services Bill makes its way through Parliament, the accountability of the financial regulators, or their lack of appropriate accountability, has become a recurring issue in the reform of the regulatory system. The issue of accountability is connected to the related issues of the unrestrained power of the FCA and of the Government refusing to listen. This was followed by the Treasury select committee carrying out a thorough investigation into the performance of the FSA in relation to... Read the rest of this entry »

Cool Trott steps into the cauldron
16.01.12
They have not been the best of starters away from home, as defeats in Multan, Brisbane, Kandy, Hamilton, Chennai and Kingston, and draws in Centurion and Brisbane, over their last 10 overseas tours, clearly show. The series against Pakistan starting in Dubai on Tuesday is England's first since they became the No. 1 Test team in the World, grabbing the title emphatically from India at home last year. The South African-born batsman has put up superb numbers for England in both Tests and one-day internationals, and looks set to be a fixture in the team for years to come. His success owes to a sure technique, an almost insatiable appetite for runs and the mental will power that has allowed him overcome the odds and critics to become a leading player for his adopted country. Traditionally, England's conservatism when faced with different environs has been decisive in Test series openers, but there is hope that after becoming the No. 1 Test side they will shed those inhibitions. The Pursued by CS Forester – review
23.11.11
His criminals aren't professionals but merely weak people who yearn, like all of us, for what they hope is happiness, and are sometimes tempted to take short cuts to obtain it. Penguin Modern Classics has now reissued them and is also publishing... These two short novels establish Forester as the improbable pioneer of a very English form of noir crime fiction – domestic, darkly ironic and as hard as a hanging judge. The ambience is closer to the fiction of George Orwell and Patrick Hamilton than to the polite and essentially reassuring puzzles of Christie and Sayers, or to the glamorous, gangster-packed novels of Chandler and Hammett. The central character is Marjorie, a suburban housewife who returns home after a decorous evening in town to find Dorothy, her pretty young sister, lying dead with her head in the oven. Instead, Forester's crime novels are Faustian fables of damnation set among London's lower middle-class. The police arrive – and so does Marjorie's loathsome husband,... Read the rest of this entry »

Are you being robbed by pension charges?
22.11.11
These proposals follow hard on the heels of a controversial report issued by Consumer Focus in July that suggested some independent financial advisers have been busily persuading pension customers to switch to new plans, at higher annual renewal... While several critics, especially IFAs, lined up to pour cold water on Consumer Focus's findings, citing lack of real evidence, the Financial Services Authority, the regulator, has previously warned about the risks to consumers of such 'churning'... , Came as he presented a report in August into pension saving, and refers in part to the danger of high plan charges deterring savers from using pensions to save for retirement. His committee's recommendations, which relate to the planned launch of automatic enrolment of employees into workplace pensions in 2012, include a request for a cap on charges - at 1. "Realistically, if you don't want to get hit and you don't want to get hurt, then don't play. If you want to play shinny, then go play shinny. And that's not trying to be cavalier or trying to be light about the subject, because nobody wants anybody to get hurt. Sad news greeted us this morning as Alexander Galimov, the lone player who initially survived the crash that claimed the lives of the entire Lokomotiv team and coaching staff died. " The Lokomotiv hockey team has ceased operations for the season, which was the right decision. The initial reports when Galimov was admitted to hospital were that his burns were "incompatible with life. Galimov had burns to roughly 90 per cent of his of his body. Sorry, but as long as there is hitting allowed at high speeds, there will always be concussions in hockey. Read the rest of this entry »

Cricket: Central Districts in dark over hosting
09.09.62
"If that happens and it goes well, and if NZC and the International Cricket Council are all happy, we're hoping that might be the precursor to New Zealand playing Zimbabwe in a test match under lights at the end of January," MCC director of... A county game between Kent and Glamorgan is being lined up for a test case, and the MCC, who have been pushing the concept for some time, hope to play a game against Northern Districts at Hamilton's Seddon Park at the end of next month. The Lord's-based Marylebone Cricket Club has been in talks with New Zealand Cricket about the idea of it being a day-night five-dayer, subject to tests of a pink ball proving successful. New Zealand has been lined up as a possible host of cricket's first day-night test, but the local association knows nothing about it. When Zimbabwe tour in January-February, their one test is at Napier's McLean Park in late January. Read the rest of this entry »

The Hargrove Suite
Then one of the other guests I brought, Nick, and I looked up to see what famous person Oakland player Conor Jackson is related to ( this character from JAG ). I think my brother checked to see if some guy used to play for the Marlins. So I mentioned to the Hargroves how I listen to the game on the radio every night and how much I love Hamilton and asked if he was "just like that in person" and Hargrove is all "Do you want to meet him. Maybe to test to see if we were cool enough to care about the media guide. Jim Rosenhaus looked really excited that not only did I know who he was I also wanted him in a picture with us. I got to talk some baseball with Mike. We were, sort of. Cathy and I looked to see what everyone's favorite band was. He immediately gave us the Indians' and A's Media Guides when we got there....

Then, when Lewis says after the race "they turned in early" you could see if they did, automatically - in fact the stewards could see that during a race. Not because I'm against Lewis Hamilton, quite the contrary, if the stewards had some kind of technical aid, then they could frame a law that is not open to wildly different interpretations ("it was a racing move") depending on which varying group... The weekend after a hectic Monaco GP I anticipated looking back at the furore over Lewis Hamilton's race and whether there should now be an automatic penalty for drivers who make contact with another car when failing to pull off an overtaking move.
